FACT OF THE DAY: In 1972, the advance team sent to China in advance of Richard Nixon’s historic visit discovered an unusual problem: the polished wooden toilet seats in China contained urushiol, a compound also present in poison ivy, and their backsides were developing rashes. Rather than bring up this delicate matter directly, the team talked loudly and at length about their problems while in the hotel room, on the assumption that they were being eavesdropped. The plan worked, and within a day, each toilet in the Americans’ hotel rooms was covered in a lace doily.
