FACT OF THE DAY: Choco pies (also known as moon pies) became popular among North Korean workers following their introduction in South Korea’s Kaesong Industrial Zone in the mid-2000s. Since the pies were worth about $1 each, a significant portion of their monthly earnings, the workers began taking choco pies back into North Korea and their popularity exploded, with black market prices reaching $9.50 per pie. After North Korea banned the pies, South Korean activists airlifted 10,000 choco pies (along with anti-North Korean propaganda) over the border in helium balloons. In July 2015, North Korea finally began producing its own choco pies and the black market collapsed.
