FACT OF THE DAY: In the 1870s, neurologist George Miller Beard documented a group of 50 lumberjacks in northern Maine who collectively exhibited behavior that he termed “jumping”—when startled, they would jump and scream to a degree beyond what would be normally expected. Other symptoms included echolalia (repeating the last words they heard) and echopraxia (mindlessly mimicking physical movements). Similar cases have been documented in other locations, but the condition remains unexplained.
