FACT OF THE DAY: “Penguin” was originally the name for the great auk, a large flightless bird living in the North Atlantic. When sailors first encountered similar-looking flightless birds in the Southern Hemisphere, they mistakenly described them as penguins as well. Since the great auk has been extinct since 1844, the Antarctic birds claimed the name.
