FACT OF THE DAY: Bouvet Island in the south Pacific is one of the remotest land locations in the world, 1,000 miles from the nearest landmass and generally unreachable by plane or boat. Fewer than 100 people are believed to have ever set foot on the island. In 1964, an expedition to the island found a lifeboat floating in an inlet with its oars resting on shore, but no other sign of life.
