FACT OF THE DAY: The word “tawdry” originates from St. Awdrey, an Anglo-Saxon saint (c. 636-679) whose followers held an annual fair in Ely, Cambridgeshire and wore lace costumes. When lacework fell out of fashion, “tawdry” became a synonym for objects that were showy but cheap.
