FACT OF THE DAY: Mount St. Helens erupted 35 years ago today, killing 57 people and destroying hundreds of square miles of wilderness. The eruption began with a magnitude 5.1 earthquake at 8:32:17 PDT that caused the largest landslide ever recorded, sending the entire north side of the mountain into the adjacent valley at over 110 miles per hour. The mountain is now 1,314 feet shorter than before the eruption.
