FACT OF THE DAY: "Blue Peacock" was a proposed nuclear mine in the 1950s, designed to be buried for several days and detonated by remote control. Since the mine needed to survive sub-zero conditions, a variety of warming mechanisms for it were proposed—one of which was to seal a group of live chickens inside the bomb casing, whose body heat could keep it warm until detonation. The project was cancelled in 1958.
