FACT OF THE DAY: Jackie Robinson was not the first African-American major-league baseball player; that honor is held by Moses Fleetwood “Fleet” Walker, catcher for the Toledo Blue Stockings, a team which graduated from the minor leagues for a single season in 1884. (Fleet’s brother, Weldy, was also hired by the team mid-season to replenish the injured roster for five games.) Walker was unable to find major-league work following the 1884 season, and by 1889, baseball teams began excluding African-Americans by unwritten policy until Robinson debuted in 1947.
