FACT OF THE DAY: David Blair was a merchant seaman who was assigned to be second officer of the Titanic, but reassigned by the White Star Line shortly before departure. Blair inadvertently left the ship carrying the keys to a storage locker that contained the binoculars for the lookouts. The lookouts later testified that with the binoculars available, they would have spotted the iceberg in time. The fateful key was auctioned to a Chinese collector in 2011 for $150,000.
