FACT OF THE DAY: At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem (completed in 335), a short wooden ladder has been propped against one of the higher windows since at least the 1850s; its origin is unknown. Since strict regulations are in place to prevent any modification to the building’s external appearance, the ladder cannot be removed.
