FACT OF THE DAY: In the 1700s the tomato was known as the “poison apple” and believed to be toxic, following several instances where wealthy aristocrats fell sick after eating them. It’s now believed the victims were poisoned by their pewter plates, since the tomatoes would absorb lead from the plates before they were eaten.
