FACT OF THE DAY: On November 20, 1980—thirty-four years ago today—an oil derrick in Lake Peignur, Louisiana accidentally drilled through the ceiling of a salt mine 1,300 feet below the surface. The salt immediately began to dissolve, and within minutes the 150-foot derrick had disappeared in ten feet of water. The entire lake then drained into the whirlpool, taking a dozen barges and boats, several houses, and 65 acres of land with it. The canal which normally drained into the Gulf of Mexico reversed course, temporarily creating a 150-foot waterfall. After two days the water pressure equalized and the lake finally refilled.
