FACT OF THE DAY: The stereotype of a witch on a broomstick derives from the 14th century, when people believed that witches rubbed hallucinogenic plant oil on a broomstick and then rubbed themselves against it. The specific plant oil used—tropane alkaloids—are best absorbed into the body through the armpit or vagina. So a witch flying on a broomstick is a metaphor for drug-enhanced masturbation.
