FACT OF THE DAY: The Richard Montgomery, a World War II cargo ship, sunk at the mouth of the Thames River in August 1944 while carrying 1,500 tons of TNT and 4,000 tons of other explosives. It rests there today and is considered too dangerous to salvage; if the wreck were to explode, it could generate a tidal wave that devastates the adjacent city of Sheerness.
