The State + iTunes = Love

Post by kbadr »

Anyone who thinks "$240 worth of pudding" or the name "Doug" are funny should be pleased to know that The State is now available for download on iTunes.

OK, I guess Steve Jobs isn't such a douche afterall.

seconded. my early feelings for sketch like Monty Python were like a hopeless schoolboy crush, it wasn't until the State came out that I told myself "one day I think I can actually do this."

michael ian black in the sierra mist commercials
viva variety - not so much

plus, it was cool that a sketch show made it on MTV and opened the door for future similar programming.

I bought them all. It's a dream come true.

I just noticed, though, that they replaced some of the hip (for then) MTV music with knockoff similar music. I guess they couldn't/didn't want to pay for the rights to some of the songs. Specifically, the "pants" sketch no longer features "Cannonball" by the Breeders, but rather a extremely similar sounding instrumental. I'm sure there are other examples.

Still well worth the money, though.

fyi, the originals with the original music are still floating around the internets. almost all of seasons 1 - 3, and the one-off Extravaganza special they did for their aborted move to CBS. also the MTV released "Skits and Stickers" VHS tape is out there too (also with original music).

I heart the state.

WHAT!?
Screw that! That song was forever defined by that sketch and vice versa. Everytime I hear that initial note, all I can think it "Maybe you should take some of your own advice!"
"I do."

Yeah, they've been trying to re-release their stuff for forever, and music rights issues are one of the main reasons why it's taken so long to happen.

Bob McNichol is my hero.

Who knew that Michael Ian Black, the man without pants, would late play a character known as Johnny Bluejeans? Then go on to find relative success in the non-cable world before returning to cable to star on VH-1's I love the 90's?

Actually, I called it in 1995...But I thought "I Love the 90's" would appear on the HA! channel.

They went to NYU for undergrad.

They did skits in Washington Square Park for a year and got picked up after doing only a few stage shows. As I recall, it was between them and Broken Lizards, but I could be wrong.

Don't forget about Stella.

Just a piece of trivia to break up my insane work day:

The State last performed together here in Austin, at 1997's Big Stinkin'.
