FACT OF THE DAY: On April 16, 1871, residents of Rochester, NY experienced a rare mirage that allowed them to see the opposite shore of Lake Ontario—50 miles away—as though it were just north of town. It happened again in Buffalo on August 18, 1894 when the Toronto harbor, 110 miles away, became plainly visible.
