I did this a few years back. And it was a friggin' blast. I've never spent so much "me" time in my life, and I've never hung out at coffee houses so much.

My novel was called Silverfish, and it's about princesses, dimension-hopping, and kittens.

Want longform improvisation practice? This is it.

That being said, I did this back before I discovered improv. There is NO WAY I would have time to do it now.

But I'm still tempted.

If you ever want to read 10,000 words of mostly unedited Roy-crafted drivel, drop me a line.

It seems like it should be even *easier* now, that we've got the ant-filter on, and won't contend with writer's block.

I did this a couple years back, too - it was a total blast, and I would love to do it again, but yeah. Time. I'd be willing to give it a shot again, though - it is such an awesome exercise, and I'd totally recommend it to anyone who's even remotely interested in writing. Even if you don't get all 50,000 words out, it's still worth your time to try and fail.

I registered again last year, and wrote zero words. I'll register again this year, and see if I can improve on that.

Oh yeah, it was 50,000 words, not 10,000. Damn I wrote a lot.

This has nothing to do with writing, but it does.

My mother retired 5 years ago. She gave herself 2 years to relax, 1 year to practice doing art, and 2 years ago, found she was having trouble getting back into a work schedule. Last year, she set a goal for herself -- to produce 10 paintings this year. That's pretty much 1 painting a month (excluding the family holidays which totally screw up our schedules).

That was a pretty big goal!! But she did it and is a better artist for it. She is now showing her work in elitist galleries in New Mexico, has a 1 woman show in Houston, and is getting commissions on her work. All of this is because she set a goal and tried to reach it. Yay goals!

Give yourself a year to do something, work on it, and you will be surprised what you can accomplish!!! My friend is trying to crank out 10 min of animation in a month. And that is CRAZY! I learned last night (from "The Incredibles" dvd) that Pixar animators probably only get to produce 10 min of film footage in a year!! And that's a LOT of work.

I love this idea of trying to write a novel in a month. Go, go, go!!!

xo,
sara

I did it in 2002. 50,007 words. Haven't managed it in years since. It was easy for me then because I only worked part-time and was single. I'm trying to pull off Mo's Novel Writing Three Months right now. MoNoWri3Mo. So far I'm doing well!

Allow me to be supportive of anyone undertaking such an undertaking. Yay undertakers!

Hear, hear! What I need is take a moment to breathe month.

I've tried this twice and still not succeeded. I'll probably give it another failing try this year, as well, especially with a looming parental visit, WaffleFest, and Thanksgiving dominating my weekends, and rehearsals and dance classes my weekday nights. But, I'm sure we'll still try.

50,000 words == 175 pages.

I looked at the website, and it seems almost like improv:

"Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly."

175/30 is 5.8 pages per day. Hmmmmm..

I'll do it. Why not?

For those of you with less time than it might take to write a novel for NaNoWriMo, let me suggest NaBloPoMo, National Blog Posting Month. A post a day on your blog for the month of November. I will participating, here.

Just film 27 hours of long form improv and type out the transcript.
They call me Dollar Bill 'cause I always make sense.
