FACT OF THE DAY: Alfred Nobel was an inventor who held 350 patents, many related to dynamite and other explosives. Upon his brother’s death in 1888, a French newspaper erroneously believed Alfred had died and published a harsh obituary titled “The Merchant of Death is Dead.” Alfred, stung by this reputation, committed the rest of his life to changing his legacy, and willed over 90% of his fortune to establish the Nobel Prizes.
