FACT OF THE DAY: In 1982, Austrian wine makers were confronted with an unusually sour grape harvest, producing poor-quality wines. They then discovered that, by adding trace amounts of diethylene glycol—one of the components of antifreeze—the wines’ flavor was restored. Millions of gallons of adulterated wine were shipped, and the scheme was only uncovered when one wine broker tried to deduct the cost of antifreeze from his taxes. The scandal was referenced in a season one episode of The Simpsons when Bart is sent to a winery and tests wine mixed with antifreeze.
