Neva Boyd was a social worker in Chicago. She used games to get immigrant children to open up and challenge themselves. Her student Viola Spolin ported over the idea into a performance space. She invented "theater games" which is similar to what you and I know of as "warmups."
This later became the core concept behind Second City Chicago.

Notice how unhinged and "out of their heads" the Spolin's students are? Is anyone else mesmerized by this?
