Upcoming electives are every Wednesday at the Hideout. Each two-hour class will cost $10 ($5 for currently enrolled Hideout students).

Check out the upcoming topics:

Wednesday, August 7, 7-9pm
Going Deep with Marc Majcher
Improv scenes are usually less than three minutes, but that doesn’t mean they should feel disposable or meaningless. In this elective with March Majcher (Hideout instructor) we’ll dive into the elements of a scene, taking them out of the realm of fast-food comedy and giving them the weight that you know the audience deserves. Stop wishing and waiting for your ten-second stinker to be wiped away and settle into a scene you’d be happy to play all damn day long.

Wednesday, August 14, 7-9pm
When the Lights Come Up with Adam Trabka
Feeling flatfooted when initiating scenes as your shows go on? Out of sync with the rest of your troupe? An opening at the top of your show is a great way not only to generate material for your show, but also build energy and get on the same page. Think of it as a way to take all of the toys out of your toybox before deciding what to play with. Adam Trabka (ColdTowne TA, member of Bad Boys) will take you through a number of opening games, including the Invocation, that will help your troupe start building momentum from the moment the lights come back up. Even if you never perform an opening on stage, this workshop will help build the muscles to improve listening, group mind and using details to your advantage.

Wednesday, August 21, 7-9pm
Step Up Your Game with Troy Miller
Your improv is here. How about taking it up to here? Troy A. Miller (Hideout instructor and director) will give you a taste of how to play multiple characters, employ on-stage combat, use third person narration, replicate cinema-like story telling, and essentially dance on the edge of oblivion by keeping your improv as risky as possible at all times. Think you can handle it? Well, you can’t — but sign up anyway.

Wednesday, September 4, 7-9pm
Instant Karma with John Ratliff
Sometimes you’ll be stuck in a scene that’s not working and wonder, “What did I do to deserve this?” As Clint Eastwood says, “Deserve’s got nothin’ to do with it” – but cause and effect does. Whether your scene is bad or brilliant, it’s usually the consequence of what came before. In this workshop, we’ll explore the sometimes-surprising results of basic improv principles and play with different approaches to common situations.

Wednesday, September 11, 7-9pm
Andy is Mean To You with Andy Crouch
Andy is probably wasting his time even trying to tell you what this workshop is all about. You’ve spent how many hours in improv classes and Andy Crouch (Hideout education director and just tired) still has to watch you flail around the stage sucking air like a fish? Jesus Christ. Well the molly coddling is over and if you want Andy’s unvarnished and possibly drunk instruction, then show up. Because in your heart of hearts you are dirty and broken and you want this.

Wednesday, September 18, 7-9pm
Yes! Say No! with Ruby Willmann
We’re told over and over again to Yes And during our improv scenes, but what happens when the scene really just needs a big fat No Way? Ruby Willmann (Hideout instructor) will walk the razor’s edge between a Yes that does nothing for your scene and a No that is the best Yes you could possibly want. Confused? Then this is the workshop for you! Come explore the relationship between denying, accepting and adding with a workshop that will be heavy on scene work and relationship exploration.
