FACT OF THE DAY: In 1842, a Democrat named James Shields challenged Abraham Lincoln to a duel. Lincoln agreed, on the stipulation that the duel be fought with broadswords at the bottom of a pit. Upon arriving and seeing his 6'4 opponent practicing with the sword, Shields decided to end the spat by accepting an apology.
