NY to Austin

Hello Austin Improv! My name is Susan Pickover and I am currently an improviser in New York City. I have been a part of the improv world for about 7 years having learned and performed at all three major long form theaters in NY: The Upright Citizen's Brigade, The Magnet Theater and The P.I.T.
I currently perform musical improv on the Magnet Theater house team Vulcan and with my indie team VEAL. http://www.magnettheater.com/performers/Susan-Pickover

My fiancé, Zach, and I are moving to Austin in mid May. YAY! I am looking forward to becoming a part of the Austin Improv scene. Any advice or recommendations are greatly appreciated. I love to perform all kinds of improv but musical improv is my true passion. I also have coached and taught it recently and would love to continue that in Austin.

Are there any piano improvisers out there that would want to meet up when I move and start something?

Here are some other things about Zach and myself. If anyone has any advise or recommendations about this stuff I would appreciate it as well. Zach is a computer animator. He is super talented and looking to get into the animation/video game scene. His work can be seen on his website http://www.willowrd.com
I am a graphic and textile designer. I'm hoping to get involved with selling my handmade items at local flea markets. My textile portfolio is http://www.pickoverdesigns.com and my handmade items are at http://www.hellobanjo.com

Well, if anyone actually read all of that THANK YOU! Hope to hear from you soon.

xoxo,
Susan

Howdy.

And welcome (almost) to Austin.

Sadly, I can not help with any of your questions.

But welcome anyway.

Welcome! And we apologize ahead of time for the summer heat.

Our nascent improv wiki has a few useful resources for newcomers: here's a list of the theaters, as well as a list of improv jams/mixers you could come to.

Sadly, we don't yet have pages for "list of musical troupes" or "list of musicians". Girls Girls Girls is a notable narrative-musical-improv troupe here in town, and there are a couple of pianists (Ammon Taylor and Michael Brockman) who work with them that you might want to get in touch with.

~ hope this helps ~

If I ever went into battle, I'd take a bunch of poodles with me.  Given a choice between shooting me or a poodle, the average person would surely aim for the poodle.

Wow, sounds like we're about to get an improv rock star. Very exciting.

I also apologize for the summer heat. Brockman and Ammon are definitely the pianists to talk to, they're both spectacular-phenomenal. And the ladies of GGG are great to know—there's also a musical troupe at The New Movement I think, but I forget its name.

…In other words, I have nothing to say that Peter didn't say already. Soooo I'll just say welcome in advance. It's a great community and sounds like you'll be a great addition.

Game dev in Austin is in a bit of a slump. Many studios have laid off workers or closed their doors. We have an IGDA chapter here, and the SIGGRAPH chapter is trying to reboot. There is a monthly meeting for Austin Autodesk Users that might be helpful in Zach's job search. Check out my instructor site for more links:

Hi Susan,
Welcome to Austin! Allendale is a great neighborhood. And I think you will the city.

For improv advice, just go see as many shows as possible, watch the forums for opportunities to perform in shows like The Fancy Pants Mash Up and Maestro, and talk to everyone- we're all very friendly!

For your design work, I'd look into selling your things at Parts and Labour.

Can't wait to meet you!
