FACT OF THE DAY: The fastest manmade object ever was a two-ton manhole cover atop a shaft at the Los Alamos nuclear facility in 1957. When a one-kiloton atomic bomb was exploded at the bottom of the shaft, the manhole cover was launched upwards at a minimum of 66 kilometers per second (almost 150,000 miles per hour). This was more than enough to launch the manhole cover permanently into space, although it's more likely that it was vaporized by contact with the air, much like an incoming meteor.
