Improvisers' Night out to see Kaci in Strike (2/13)

Post by Roy Janik »

The shortish version!

* Kaci is in a scripted play directed by Graham Schmidt at SVT.
* Wednesday is Industry Night, so it's Pay-What-You-Can night for artists, improvisers, actors, etc...
* It'd be an awesome thing for a hoard of improvisers to go and demonstrate that we're actively interested in being a part of the larger theatre community.
* Wednesday, 8pm, Salvage Vanguard

The longish version:

My dear wife Kaci's been in a ton of shows and done lots of things, but this is her first scripted theatre role for many, many years. I think it would be awesome to get a big group together to support her.

The evening is comprised of two Russian plays directed by Graham Schmidt. You might think that sounds stuffy, but the playwright takes inspiration from Quentin Tarantino and his own experience in Russian street gangs. The other super cool thing about this show is that these plays just are not performed very much at all, and the fact that Graham is putting them on is actually very special.

Another side goal with this is the fact that as improvisers, we can benefit immensely from watching scripted productions and letting the staging, wording, and choices filter back into our own work. Plus, going en masse is a pretty sweet way of saying "Hey, we're interested in what's going on in the larger arts community."

The show runs through this weekend, but Wednesday is an excellent night to go. It's Industry night, so it's pay what you can.

Here's the description of the show:

"I am the Machine Gunner" (translated by John Freedman) portrays a street tough meditating on his first gun battle, and recalling/becoming his grandfather, who fought in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II's eastern front, The Moonzund Landing Operation. Starring Joey Hood, this one-act monologue walks the line between tenderness and brutality for which Klavdiev has achieved considerable renown throughout Russia.

"Martial Arts" (adapted by David White) is the story of two young children on the mean streets of a post-Soviet industrial town, which is a shell and a wreck of its former self. But this is no normal story of fleeing circumstances; Klavdiev fits their struggle into Russia's rich tradition of children's fantasies, recasting dragons as drug-dealers and witches as crooked cops. Doing so, he makes accessible these almost-unbearable tales of children's suffering. Another way to think of this story is that it's as if Roald Dahl wrote "Pulp Fiction." Starring Michelle Keffer, Sergio Alvarado, Bob Jones, Kaci Beeler, David Higgins and Molly Karrasch as Boy.
