Best Support Moves 2013

Post by Spots »

I've been excited for this moment. I couldn't wait another week for New Years to get this going.

This is similar to "Best Show Lines" but these are moves that best integrate other players into the scene so that they come out looking like rock stars. These are back-having moves.

An example from 2012. Dan Grimm made his partner's snafu into my single favorite improv moment of the year.

Nobody was left hanging. It was mind-blowing.

DONNELLY: Dad. I don't want to become a doctor.

TREW: I assumed for my entire life my middle child was gonna be a doctor. And now he's not!?

DONNELLY: No.

GRIMM: Hey dad I'm on my way out. I'm going to Mars tomorrow. See ya.

TREW: Now THAT'S a son. All those planet books I got him. All those wars .. movies I got him. They didn't waste on nothing.

[Grimm reenters]

GRIMM: Sorry. I forgot my laser rifle. We're invading.

Last night during a recital my friend Brendan entered the scene and stood. Two players also entered without paying attention to him. Instead they sat down in chairs and began driving a really fast car.

Tension began to mount the longer they failed to address Brendan standing next to them... outside the moving car.

Then Brendan broke out this amazing offer:

"Everything looks good from out here on the side car."

The scene continued.

"I got an idea. I should be able to check the headlights. Speed up and the centripetal force will pin me to the hood so I can get a better look from up there."

It was a strong perspective to take with the purpose of making his partner's choice look good. Otherwise he patiently played the scene and simply let his friends shine.
