FACT OF THE DAY: 500,000 Purple Heart medals were manufactured in anticipation of the invasion of Japan at the end of World War II. They proved unnecessary when the atomic bomb ended the war. As of 2003, 120,000 were still in stock, so many that combat units in Iraq and Afghanistan keep medals on-hand for immediate award to wounded soldiers in the field.
