Voice and Staging Class?

Post by shksprtx »

I have been thinking about proposing a Saturday workshop entitled "Voice and Staging for the Improvisor." However, before I submit a formal proposal, I wanted to see how many peeps would be interested...

Synopsis:

This workshop will explore basics of vocal and physical work on stage, including but not limited to: Speech apparatus, vocal projection, volume, vocal warmups, and basic staging and stage movement techniques for improvisors and actors of a variety of skill levels. Open to those wanting to learn the basics of moving and talking on stage as well as those more experienced performers wanting to refresh themselves on voice and movement. DIALECTS WILL NOT BE COVERED IN THIS WORKSHOP."

My Credentials:

I have just over fifteen years experience performing everything from Sophocles to Mamet in venues ranging from the size of the Hideout Cabaret to thousand-seat houses packed with screaming children. I have performed improv semi-professionally with troupes in Corpus Christi, TX and Commerce, TX. I carry an AA, BA, and MA in Theatre, have completed my coursework for the PhD in Theatre at Texas Tech, and am a currently certified UIL One-Act Play Critic Judge.

Other:

The workshop would focus primarily on warm-ups and other exercise-based, practical techniques, although there will be some lecture-type stuff happening.

I understand there is a workshop being offered soon called "Acting for Improvisors." My assumption is that this workshop will focus more on character than basic stage technique. Please feel free to disabuse me of this notion if necessary.

People say i have a good voice, but I have stage fright. How can I overcome it? I can also stand up in front of audiences and do a play or something, or act ridiculous. But I can't even sing in front of my Bio class. Why is this? I just want to be able to sing my favorite songs (Coldplay) and not be embarrassed. Or be able to maybe one day sing on stage.
