-I love seeing Melissa McCarthy up there for best supporting in Bridesmaids (which is also up for best screenplay)
-Sorry to not see Hunter McCracken in the mix for supporting for Tree of Life, it's a crime there's still no award for Casting
-Hugo with so many nods? It was pretty and fun to watch in 3D but that's just muddy storytelling even for (especially for) a kid's movie
-No love for Chipwrecked???

MY OPINIONS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT

I want to know why The Adventures of Tintin did not get nominated for Best Animated and Kung Fu Panda 2 did.

I am about 100% it had to do with it being Mo-Cap. I think that some people feel that's cheating. Once that the thick-skulls that nominate stuff like that realize that even the earliest of hand-drawn animation used reference films, they'll stop caring so much about mo-cap.

I DO like that even amongst the crap that got nominated for best animated, Cars 2 got nothing.

Melissa McC and "Man or Muppet" are the two biggest surprises to me. Tree of Life even coming close to winning would be the biggest though.

People need to stop pretending to like The Artist. It's getting too much credit.

Best picture at the Lanscars goes to Drive. A movie too cool to get nominated for anything but sound.

also sad to see Tintin get no love beyond score. and nada for 50/50? psh...but huzzah to the Descendants, Bridesmaids and Moneyball! still really need to see The Artist and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. oh, and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

As I whined on Facebook: I have seen zero of the Best Picture nominees, and one of the twenty nominated acting roles. 2011 will be known in my diary as "The Year Kevin Saw No Movies."

Full disclosure, I haven't seen The Artist and don't really think that Roy is pretending to like it.

It just reeks of the kind of movie that will be covered in awards then completely forgotten in a few years.

I have eaten plenty of words though.

"The Artist" - Haven't seen it, will probably not like it (unless the whole movie is about that dog), will probably win
"The Descendants" - Haven't seen it, will probably find it so-so, will probably not win
"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" - Haven't seen it, already hate it, has a decent chance of winning.
"The Help" - Same as EL&IC
"Hugo" - Saw it, liked it a lot, probably won't win.
"Midnight in Paris"- Haven't seen it, next in Netflix Queue, won't win.
"Moneyball" Saw it, really liked it, doesn't deserve to win, might win
"The Tree of Life" Saw it, Loved it, Deserves to win, Will never possibly Win.
"War Horse" Haven't seen it, Love S.S., has an okay chance of winning.

I loathed the first part of the Artist, thinking it was a wasn't-classic-hollywood-great jerkoff-fest, but then they started playing with the established conventions and I was won over

I saw The Artist last night and had a pretty similar experience with it.

I'm also probably the only person in the world who didn't find Berenice Bejo positively enchanting. Probably because her character's name was Peppy and she was working overtime to prove it was fitting.

Look, you guys. The Artist has this dog, whose real-life name is Uggie. And he's in pretty much the whole movie killin' it.

Full disclosure: the first thing out of my mouth upon leaving the theater was, "I want that dog."

The good news this year is that there won't be a huge upset. Tree of Life can't win and the rest will probably be mostly forgotten in years to come.

The real good news is that Charlie Kaufman doesn't have a movie out to No Way Never Ever Possibly Win the Fuck out of the rest of those bombs.
Actually: I've seen none of those films except Tree of Life which I loved down to my shivering soul (twice) and which absolutely deserves to Positively Not Win Under Any Circumstances.

I've seen most of the best picture nominees (I have a strict rule against movies with horses as main characters) and the thing that irks me every year is the total lack of independent films. Last year 'Blue Valentine', in my mind, a shoe in for Best Picture somehow didn't even get nominated. With 10 spots this year I'm blown away the films that got overlooked including:
Shame
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Rum Diaries
Pariah
Like Crazy
and Take Shelter.
