False Matters – Stories improvised in the style of Philip K.
What if everything you knew was wrong?
Hot on the heels of their hit show Showdown, Gnap! Theater Projects launches into their most ‘mind-blowing’ project yet. False Matters, an improvised take on the speculative and often visionary science fiction worlds of acclaimed author Philip K. Dick. Each show will present a unique take on the psychedelic brew of Dick’s themes, including the mutability of time, reality, and identity as well as conspiracy theories, mind-altering drugs, psychic powers, androids and off-world human settlements.

Shannon McCormick, director of False Matters and Gnap! Theater Projects’ Artistic Director, says, “I’ve wanted to do a PKD project for a long time. Most of the time when improv companies and ensembles mine genre works for inspiration and source material, the genres are fun and rewarding but not all that experimental in how they play around with form. They’re just straight up stories. But with Dick, we get to really play around with the mechanisms of how a story works. Time might come unglued, there might be huge ambiguities whether the world we’re in is real, if any of them are. In fact, when you run down a list of Dick’s typical subject matter, it starts looking like the description of an improv show going off the rails. We’re looking forward to getting good at performing in a place where we’re not quite sure what is really going on.”
Gnap! Theater Projects shows aim to bridge the gap between Austin’s theater and improv communities, and False Matters brings together some of Austin’s finest improvisers with an author whose sometimes wry, sometimes paranoid worldview endears him to cutting edge artists and audiences.
The Cast includes Aden Kirschner, Craig Kotfas, Courtney Hopkin, Jon Bolden, Kareem Badr, Kevin Miller, Kristin Firth, Kyle Traughber, Liz Brammer, Marc Majcher, Ruby Willmann, and Shannon McCormick
