Showdown – a Gritty Improvised Western Serial

In a world between savagery and civilization, no one knows what's going to happen next.

Showdown is an improvised ensemble production depicting life and death in the fictitious town of Showdown set in the Republic of Texas. The cast will explore the conflict of justice and lawlessness, desire and duty and the corruption that comes with power. As annexation to the United States looms, this six-part serialized improv drama follows returning characters as their relationships, desires and secrets unfold in the grittiest of environments.

Avimaan Syam, director of Showdown, about the production: “This show goes beyond the cliched battle of Good versus Evil. What makes the West such an enticing environment isn’t the aura of superlatives associated with its history, but the presentation of humanity stripped away of the pretensions of civilization. Humanity that knows their candle can be extinguished at the drop of a hat. Showdown will portray that struggle as honestly as we can. What I love about improv isn’t making up jokes on the spot: it’s seeing theatre without a net. Showdown asks its cast to improvise in a world with dire consequences--death, abuse, degradation, mercilessness--and still look for truth and beauty. We aren’t going for the laugh. We’re going for drama, which I’m thrilled about.”

Gnap! Theater Projects shows aim to bridge the gap between Austin’s theater and improv communities, and to that end Showdown brings some of the city’s finest improvisers and actors together on one stage.

The Cast includes Andreas Fabis, Clay Towery, Jason Vines, Jericho Thorp, Jesse Bertron, Jordan T. Maxwell, Julie Gillis, Katie Van Winkle, Liz Brammer, and Shana Merlin
