Austin Improv

Mortified Austin is turning three. We have a hilarious show with two dates next week: Thursday, January 20th, and Friday, January 21st at the U.S.A.A. Four brilliant Austin improvisers are performing in the show: Ruby Young, Jordan Maxwell, Matt Craighead and Taylor Overstreet.

If you haven't seen Mortified, it is an excavation of childhood and teenage relics - diaries, love letter, home movies, lyrics- shared by their authors in front of total strangers. With songs and covers by our oft-praised band The After School Delight, Mortified has been hailed 'a cultural phenomenon' by Newsweek.

We are also planning a diorama exhibit as our audience enters the theater. All the dioramas will be judged science fair style with a ballot box for the audience. The theme of the dioramas will be the creators High School Experience (whatever that may be.) Everyone who enters gets two free tickets to the show (a $30 value), and the winner gets $35 cash, 2nd place $15, and 3rd place $10.

Ruby has told me all about the show and I'm really excited to see it. Is there a way for me to jump on this the next time it comes around?

your calibre of writing might be too high...as Pat pitched me on it, it's supposed to be stuff you're embarrassed to read in public.

since i am incapable of embarrassment, i had to try and gauge my selections based on what MOST people would be embarrassed by...of course, using that metric didn't help me narrow it down any since most normal human beings would be shamed into catatonia for writing the dreck i've produced, particularly in adolescence.

For anyone who has never been, Mortified is super funny and everyone has a good time. I highly recommend going.

For anyone considering performing, I had a really good time when I did it. I read an episode of Star Trek I wrote as a kid, complete with sound effects! The audience is so supportive that it just ends up being a blast!

all right, i wound up settling on theatre kid. but i could easily fit brainiac or nerd nerd as well (even if my grades didn't reflect it, lol). i was a freak who believed in Jesus, but i don't think that's what that meant. i'm sure i frightened my fair share of people. if we count martial arts, i was a "jock" for a bit there (though stopped training to focus on theatre). and at one point i was accused of being a gang leader...

...though that was in the fifth grade (not a joke. :p)

I wish the huge stack of comics I drew from 5th-10th grade weren't sitting in a dresser back in Pittsburgh, I have years and pages of story and continuity about four stick figures that more or less copy the Power Rangers in format but with wheels for legs, named after the four mythic swords from Final Fantasy Legend III. It would be awesome to give Cycle Sticks a sendoff in some way. Maybe next year I suppose.

heh. when Patrick was first talking to me about what to do a piece about, we considered focusing on a line of superheroes i created in middle school...but unfortunately the art was all done by friends of mine who could actually draw and the notes and scripts i wrote at age 12 have vanished into the ether. so the fates of Gash, Enygma and the Copperhead will have to wait for another day.

I was but only for like a year and some change.

And fuck what anyone says, Jars of Clay's second album is still a great album. It's kinda sad that after Much Afraid was released they turned into the same old Kumbaya shit every other Christian band does.

eh, the second album had a few good tracks, but it doesn't touch the first album for me at all. Worlds Apart can still choke me up...

i was a freak, and i loved Jesus. but i was not a Jesus Freak (at least not by DC Talk standards...:p )

Their first album was extremely solid and well-produced, and I have a personal love of it because Haseltine's vocals weren't as high then and right in my vocal range for when I'm singing to myself in the car. It's also a nice album because it's very simple and catchy as hell. I happen to like Much Afraid better since it's more involved and melodic, making it an album that in retrospect probably helped influence more of what I listen to today (as an example Mew, which layers so much stuff together and it sounds brilliant).

On-topic sidenote, poll lacks anime nerd option. Nothin' like walking into school in a badly silk-screened Sailor Moon shirt that's a size too small. Back in the old days when Toonami and waking up at 8AM on Sundays to watch DBZ was all you had.
