Merlin Works Improv Mixer - Sunday, Jan. 16 at SVT

Post by Merlin Works »

Mix! Meet! Mingle! Play! Audition!

Merlin Works will be hosting our quarterly Improv Mixer at Salvage Vanguard Theater on January 16. As usual, The Improv Mixer is intended to help improvisers make new friends and form or find troupes to rehearse and perform with. It's kinda like Speed Dating for Improvisers.

The Mixer is open to the entire community: students, free agents, existing troupes looking for new members, coaches, or anyone who wants a free workout. At the beginning, scouts and coaches will let the group know what they are looking for. Then Shana Merlin will lead an improv warmup where everyone will get to know each other and get comfortable. Then we will be divided into groups for open scenework. It's free, it's fun, and you just might get cast in a show or set up with a group of improvisers and a coach to form a new troupe.**

Sunday, January 16
2-4pm
Salvage Vanguard Theater, Mainstage 2803 Manor Road
Instructor: Shana Merlin
FREE
RSVP to classes@merlin-works.com, on event listing on our Facebook page facebook.com/merlinworks, or just show up!

** Attending the mixer does not guarantee you will be placed in a troupe.

CASTING FOR PIP MARCH PERFORMANCES

The PIP (Puppet Improv Project) will be doing 4 unique shows in 2011 -- each exploring different styles of puppetry, including styles that require multiple performers on one puppet. Our hope is to offer something new each quarter both for audiences, and for performers. To achieve this ambitious goal, the PIP will be brining in experts from around the country to work with the cast and (hopefully) elevate the work to a new level.

In the March shows, our focus will be on playing to a live video camera with television monitors -- in the tradition of Sesame Street and Muppet Show style puppetry. Guest puppet experts will include Josh Cohen (of the "Josh & Tamara" show), and Caroline Reck (of "Fup Duck"). Rehearsals will toggle between Monday and Thursdays in January & February, with a one-off workshop on a Saturday. Shows will be in March, possibly Thursdays or Sundays, with a one-off performance on Friday.

We will be looking for committed ensemble performers who want to work together to learn the art of breathing life (and humor) into inanimate objects. Currently, we have a core cast of veteran performers, but I will be at the Merlin Works Mixer looking to fill out the cast.

If you have a passion for ensemble improvisation, and an interest in performing with puppets, contact producing artistic director, Sara Farr.

It was great having so many faces there yesterday! I'm very grateful for the big ol' passel of you who stayed for Showdown auditions--there was some truly inspiring stuff, and I wish I could take all the people I want instead of just the limited amount I need for the cast.

Word. Just judging by the tone and quality of the scenes that Avi set up there, I think this is going to be a fantastic show. Serial drama, fuck yeah.

I'm punching myself cowboy-style for not being able to make it out for this. I've wanted to do a western improv show for a long time now.

Here is the final cast for Showdown:

Andreas Fabis
Clay Towery
Jason Vines
Jericho Thorp
Jesse Bertron
Jordan Maxwell
Julie Gillis
Katie Van Winkle
Liz Brammer
Shana Merlin

I am incredibly excited to work with all these wonderful individuals and the diverse theatrical backgrounds they draw from.

I am terribly disappointed that I can't offer more roles to all the talented people who auditioned. The cast is particularly small with the serialized nature of the show, and really the final casting decisions came down to balancing types in relation to gender, ages, looks, etc.

I was both reminded why I love watching players I know & delighted by people I'd never seen before. I wish I could work with more of you on this project.

Cheers,

Avimaan
