Improv Video Jam is an experiment in storytelling with film, improvisation, and emergent narrative. It starts by getting 8-12 improvisers together in a context – in this case a house party – with a couple of cameras and over the course of a night filming a bunch of short, crisp scenes.
The story is just five degrees off reality. We are interested in how groups end and how people respond to endings, especially among the intimate strangers where we work and play. The characters will be at a closing night party of a comedy improv show, in a town very much like Austin, with people very much like their friends. This is closing night, so one thing is ending and another starting, if they have things to tell people, this is the night. From the scenes created at our House Party, we will choose a few narrative threads to take forward, inviting improvisers to other contexts (an office, a park, a café) over the next few weeks to extend their characters with more scenes that we will film.
Where does this story go? How does it go? We’re not sure. Our premise is that improvisers and filmmakers tell stories and when they get together cool stories will emerge. With the raw material, plus the scenes that follow and then some creative editing, we think we can create some interesting, unpredictable ensemble stories.
