Hey, since there's no music club thread, I thought I'd post this one here.

What records are you listening to right now?

Here's my recent hit list:

Ships, by Danielson (this album is fucking amazing--Deerhoof meets Sufjan Stevens fronted by a shrieking, yelping good kind of avant-garde Christian)
A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, by Jospehine Foster ( 21st century freak folker with operatic voice sings 19th century German lieder arranged by herself to include spooky guitar feedback)
Fishscale, by Ghostface Killah (not as good as Supreme Clientele, but pretty great. Skits, as always, are a stupid idea on rap albums--how did this become a standard hip-hop convention. Someone kill it now)
Choubi! Choubi!: Folk and Pop Music from Iraq (title says it all. this is not world music as safe for white middle class people. This is what Iraqi cab drivers listen to)

total disregard for rhyme scheme and really weird phrasing. you should also check out a worm's life. it's depressing and morose and sad. it's great, too. great with sleepytime tea and a chat about death by the fireplace.

Mike Patton (from Faith No More and Mr. Bungle [the greatest band ever]) collaborates with everyone under the sun.

There's a song where Norah Jones has a dirty sailor mouth.

Everyone should hear this record.

I've all but given up on the concept of "albums" thanks to the ability to buy individual songs for cheap.

Right now I'm stuck on various songs by White Ghost Shivers, The Rogues (bagpipes), Charlie Daniels Band (several songs from How Sweet the Sounds - 25 favorite hymns), Billy Randolph and the High Hatters (swing and lindy music), Etta James, and Billy Connolly.

I fucking love Mike Patton, and yes, Mr. Bungle is the greatest band ever. I have never heard the songs you mentioned here but I must. Have you heard his stuff with "The Dillinger Escape Plan"? That shit fucking rules.

I can't pass these threads up. I'm with Shannon -- that Danielson record is awesome (i've played "trumptet" at least a hundred times already, still not tired), Josephine Foster sounds crazy/crazier (as does that Children's Hour stuff), and that Fishscale record (on Shannon's recommendation) renewed my faith in Wu-Tang side projects.

.Spacemen 3 -- Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To ---> I bought this record a long long time ago and the recent house-move helped me uncover it again. These "demos" beat the studio versions by miles.
.Pierre Henry/Michel Colombier -- Messe Pour Le Temps Present --> I hadn't pulled this record out in a long time, but recently found mp3s of it and have been playing these off and on. It's not one of those records you can play over and over, but every once in awhile it's really damn refreshing.

Bob, we need to have a record party! So have you heard the Josephine Foster album, too? I like it, but her best is All the Leaves Are Gone--that record is unbelievable.

I haven't actually heard the new Josephine Foster, but Leaves and Hazel Eyes were on the ipod for a long while. i have the Children's Hour and Born Heller records archived off the hard drive somewhere too. Her voice rides that thin line of bizarre and then addictive after repeated listens.

I heart heart heart Daniel Smith and all the Danielson stuff though. Easily in the top 10 of memorable shows, I got to see the whole Famile in 2001 at the Fireside in Chicago. There were all of maybe 50 people there (including Albini) with mouths just agape at the stage show -- three "sisters" in the nurse uniforms, two drummers at times, Brother Daniel screaching and preaching above it all, and healing for everyone. Sincerity goes a long long way.
