Lux seems sort of underdressed. Or overdressed, actually.

When is this CD mix due?

Can we actually have all 20 of us done by that date? I'd like to see that.

What, like you're going to listen to twenty CDs in one day?

Exact order is still being struggled with. If you're interested in the specific track titles, they'll be visible if you play it on your computer.

I am including Orchestra BaoBab which is a pan-african afro-beat orchestra , Amadou et Mariam a blind married couple from Mali who play with polyrhythms effortlessly, Fela Kuti the pioneer who created a fusion of jazz, funk and african chant, Femi Kuti son of Fela and inspiration for this album, Youssou N'Dour a popular Senagelese singer who originated the Mbalax style, as well as The Budos Band , The Ethiopiques, Ayama Tiyamya and Salif Keita.

For folks unfamiliar with this style of music, the names will sound exotic but for those that are into it - they'll sound trite. They're pretty much the biggest acts out of sub-Saharan Africa with the exception of The Budos Band which is a New York based Afro-funk band on the Dap Tone label.

I initially programmed a broader sampling, including Bembya Jazz, Ali Farka Toure, Boubacar Traore, Tinariwen and others. I'd still reccommend them - but they just didn't fit. It just became too untennable to mash together music recorded in Africa in the 60's with that in the 00's and in completely different styles. The Kuti clan is also well known for making one-track albums which means I had a hobson's choice of a songs under 10 minutes. I ripped the first track off of vinyl so it'll sound especially authentic

I usually end up making samplers because I have no ability to put together mixes (I have a world of respect for good DJ's). In the end, it's just music I hope people like. It's got soul and real authenticity in both the happiness and the saddness. That commitment simply transcends language or style and I Hope y'all enjoy it even if it's not normally your thing.

-Mike

P.S. - Love what I'm seeing already. I love Joe Henry, Nick Cave, Kate Bush and Elliot Smith just to highlight a couple of the ones I see.
