Austin Improv: The Nicest Assholes in the Improv Scene
Oh, it's all good. Karma will come give all a collective bite in the ass soon enough, and it will give us more opportunities to be cynical and self-righteous. See, it all works out in the end!
I didn't think I said anything particularly nasty, but if it came across as such I'm sorry. I'll think twice about my tone in the future, lest my clicky-clicky-posty persona paint me as an arrogant asshole.

OK, look Bob, I already edited my reply because I thought it was ill-considered. And again, you have a tendency to think I'm talking about you when I'm not. Chris has said unpleasant things about Harsh, but here he was advocating we should all say nice things, and my question was why? We don't say bad things about people from Omaha or Tulsa or wherever because they don't come in getting paid thousands of dollars to trade in on the brandname reputation established by celebrities.
I rarely take personal offense on these boards, but I am in fact offended by your "look at what that says about you tone" when I wasn't even talking about you. Jeesh.

Part of this is due to feelings of insecurity about our scene on a national level.
Part of this is us being extra cynical.
Part of this is online mob mentality.
And part of this is similar to what would have happened when any internationally-recognizable troupe lent its name to a touring company of unfortunate souls who have the impossible task of living up to that name.
Imagine if we had just seen the Kids in the Hall Touring Sketch Company. No show could live up to the hype that's implied by the name alone.
So, unfair thread? Probably. Embarrassing? Yep. Reason to start throwing large rocks at each other? Nah.
I applaud anyone who can be a touring improviser. Must be an amazing experience.

Sometimes it's a form of love just to talk to somebody that you have nothing in common with and still be fascinated by their presence.

I think that's silly.York99 wrote:exactly. because that's the way it works.ratliff wrote:Assuming that the party guests are everyone in the world who's online.York99 wrote:Just as in normal etiquette, if you wouldn't say something at a party that someone might overhear that you don't want to hear it, then don't post it here. Right? Easy.
And I think this has been blown way out of proportion. So people can only post, "That was awesome!" and not "That was meh." ?
It's an improv discussion board. No one's posts were out of line, it all sounded like constructive criticism or praise, at least to me.
Just like bands that come to SXSW or ACL are going to be critiqued publicly by music lovers of Austin, so will other touring groups in their respective artforms.
It's the risk of showcasing your stuff.
People paid money to see your stuff.
People have expectations, whether high or low, about what they are going to see.
People are going to talk about it.
Hopefully they won't be totally rude or out of line when they talk, but it's going to happen. If there's praise, criticism probably exists as well.
It's "art", it debatable.
This is a "forum", where discussion happens.
I was chiming in and responding to John's and Jill's and Chris's and a ton of people's posts, and I took it down because I realized it was unfair when I posted it and even said as much. But again, where was the feeling of outrage that we're being dicks to outsiders when there's a whole thread dedicated to how crappy one troupe's "improv tragedy" format is or when Justin states flatly that he thinks 3 For All does crappy stories. I was noting the disparity, because of all the groups, UCBTourco is the one best suited to deal with that kind of response because they'll be crying all the way to the bank.mcnichol wrote:Sorry dudes. Say whatever you want. Sorry I offended you Shannon. I did think you were talking about me since you'd been replying to my post. My bad.
I think some of you guys have a chip on yr shoulders about "big city improv" or whatever you seem to perceive nyc/ucb to be, or at least it seriously reads that way on this thread. Stick it to the man, y'all. Here's to southern hospitality!
