Check out the album A Strangely Isolated Place by Ulrich Schnauss if you're in for some pretty awesome post-rock. Very peaceful, and great for background music.

Very excellent. Apparently, the lead singer improvises his lyrics in the studio!

Also, Rachel's (ambient classical). Neutral Milk Hotel, John Harbison gamelan compositions, Efterklang.

Dark Night of the Soul is an album written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse. It features a wide range of singers including James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils; these singers also had a hand in composing and producing the work.

Due to a dispute with the record label EMI, the album may never be released, however the book is available for sale on the official website for Dark Night of the Soul along with a blank recordable CD-R and all copies will be clearly labeled "For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will."

You can stream it from NPR here. It's bloody amazing; easily the best album of the year thus far.

Whoa, there. 2009 has been a SOLID year for good music. While I do enjoy Dark Night of the Soul, I would put the following above it in terms of "Best Albums of 2009" thus far:

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Various Artists - Dark Was the Night
Antony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light
St. Vincent - Actor
Bon Iver - Blood Bank EP
Swan Lake - Enemy Mine
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
Au Revoir Simone - Still Night, Still Light
Fever Ray - Fever Ray
A.C. Newman - Get Guilty

Keep in mind that June 9th will bring Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca. If SXSW shows were any indication, that album could be a gamechanger.

One of my favourite moments from last night was before a lot of people showed up, I went out to the catwalk to get some air and startled this cute girl sitting playing a guitar and singing on the stairs. Not sure why I was so forward, but I asked her what her name was - trying to figure out if she was an improviser or practicing to go on stage in the downstairs theater. She said "Dana" and even though I've never met her or seen her live - it clicked - and I said "Falconberry?". Stunned, she said "yes!". Then we talked for a bit - not sure if it was creepy or flattering that I knew who she was.....but whatever...I thought it was cool that she just happened to randomly be sitting there. How awesome and creative is this space we have downtown?

Here is me on page 13 of this thread, recommending her music:
Miggy wrote: Lastly - and I'm not much of a local live music guy by any stretch, but I'm really digging the voice on this Austin girl that was recommended to me. I haven't seen her play live but she has video of her songs here (she has full back up on her album, but not in these clips):

P.S. - to find that post I had to flip through pretty much this entire thread and it, too, made me happy. :)
