Gov. Palin...
1 - What is "Clean Coal"?... FYI, there is no such thing. The 2007 Australian of the Year, paleontologist and environmental activist Tim Flannery made the assertion that "Coal can't be clean".
2 - Did we figure out how to deal with nuclear waste?... FYI, you can't put a price tag on clean nuclear power because it doesn't exist yet. And, btw, did you know that coal power plants also produce radioactive wastes????
Also, as a Houstonian, whose family is entrenched in the oil industry, WE SHOULD NOT OVER DRILL!!! or else A) we will run out before we have a strong alternative fuel system, and B) there are physics involved and if taken out too quickly, it can damage the oil field. Mitigating drilling hazards - balancing driling risks against the optimal well design while preparing for UNPLANNED DRILLING EVENTS - has been a challenge to cost effective well construction for decades.
FYI, did you know that HOUSTON is THRIVING from the oil and gas turmoil? They are profiting from the war (did you know we were sill at war with terrorists??) and from the middle east turmoil. Those people are greedy and only want more, more, more... feeding on fear and false patriotism.

After watching those 2 speeches I feel very sick to my stomach (and it not from the stomach flu I am still battlin'). That was hideous. My fear is that undecided voters saw that pile of cleverly sarcastic one-liners and were hypnotized into believeing that either of them actally said something about what McCain/Palin plans to do for this country. What I took away from those speeches is that being a community organizer is a bad thing and that being in a POW camp qualifies you to run the country AND if something should happen to said POW, then at least the back-up has some "executive experience". At one point I turned to my wife and said "are they actually comparing the conditions in America to the conditions inside a POW camp?" If so, it is a great comfort knowing that John McCain will survive the torture to give me a thumbs up and a grin as if to tell me everyting will be alright. WFT did that even mean?
Before I go further, let me say that I appreciate John McCain's service to my country. However if they keep telling me about it over and over it will become unimportant to me. If it were that important to Americans, then wouldn't John Kerry have won last time around? Is that all they have to hang their cowboy hats on?
I did have 3 things that I enjoyed out of the speeches:
1. When Guiliani bashed Obama's political rise and then said "only in America". The crowd moaned and groaned until Rudy went back to insulting Obama.
2. Soaking in the awkwardness of "the boyfriend" being in the family box and on the stage, but never being acknowledged in any way, shape, or form. That's the way to support your newest family member.
3. The camera man (I was watching on MSNBC) was cutting to very cute shots of Willow (the youngest Palin daughter) holding and caring for her little brother Trigg (Palin's infant son with Down's Syndrome). They were very touching and sweet (seriously) until the 3rd or 4th time when he cut to her taking a giant lick of her hand and using it to plaster down Triggs hair grandma style. Then Willow obviously had a hair or something in her mouth becasue she made a strange face. It was priceless!!!
I was also glad to see that Palin did not come off as an alternative to Hillary. She is far from it. She was just another in a long line of ultra conservatives that stuck to the party line no matter what.
So - get your popcorn ready. It's gonna be a show between now and November!

Sort of fun to watch the "family values" crowd come out to support the idea of a woman with 5 children (1 with "special needs") run for a demanding office that will make time spent with said family scarce.

she did a good job of performing the speech, and filling her role of wounded attack dog.
i was taken aback at how negative the tone of the speeches were throughout the night, but am not surprised on the whole.
they definitely got the base riled up, now i am curious to see if mccain and crew can sway any independent voters.
on a separate but related note, there is a really funny live mic video that captures two republican press peeps slamming the choice of palin off camera, after praising the choice moments earlier.

i had been curious with just what an unknown quantity she is to see Palin's speech last night. of course, after seeing it, i realize she's not an unknown quantity at all. she's exactly the same kind of divisive, moralistic, hypocritical political puppet and mouth piece who'll do her best to appeal to the worse angels of our nature that we've dealt with for the last 8 years. the fact that her speech last night was written by Bush's speech writer is no accident. "more of the same" may just be a bumper sticker slogan the Dems can wave around...but it's becoming more and more apt.
the thing that scares me? the possibility that people won't care about what a McCain/Palin administration will do to the economy, to the environment, to our ability to successfully and wisely defend our nation, to education, to civil liberties. they'll see the same "God is good and gays are bad" rhetoric, the same hypocrisy that says the government can pry your gun from your cold dead hand but that that same government is more qualified to tell a woman what to do with her body than she is, the same Rove style attack dog tactics where you forget, ignore or make up facts about your opponent, denegrate their accomplishments (even if people on your side share those accomplishments), blast their inexperience (even if people your side have vastly less experience...yes, Ms. Palin. community organizers DO have "actual" responsibilities, you condescending twit) and lather it all up in enough snark to drown Larry David in while lowering the level of our national discourse to that of a sixth grade playground (great speech, Rudy. pointer: you don't have to hold for laughter and applause when they're not occurring)...and they'll fall for it. Again. just like they did in 2000, just like they did in 2004.
there was a time i was excited to see McCain get the Republican nomination. but i realize now that time was 2000, when he actually had principles and a backbone instead of this pandering gimmicky crony they've somehow animated in his place. and it's insulting to think that the only reason he chose Palin (because he sure didn't vet her beforehand to see if she'd bring any policy experience or philosophical balance to his administration) was to try and appeal to both the religious right who've had a stranglehold on this country for far too long AND Hillary supporters who they assume will just vote for anyone with a vagina...or at least it would be, if it weren't actually working.
(saw a young female pundit last night say the fact that Palin is a woman is reason enough for Hillary supporters to jump over to the Republican ticket, regardless of the fact that they'd be voting against their own issues and principles, and in the next breath saying she would NEVER vote for Hillary just because she was a woman. why? because she'd be voting against her issues and principles. we're sadly firmly entrenched in silly season now, i fear)

As for Palin's speech last night? She said nothing of substance. The first half was spent talking about her family. The second half was spent vaguely hinting around about ideas or outright exaggerating her qualifications. And she did it all with an odd smug sneer toward the camera.
The oddest part was Giuliani's speech where he was trying to build Palin up to have more experience than Obama and Biden combined. Seriously? Ridiculous.

i hate listening to Giuliani speak. he's got the stilted delivery of a bad stand up comic who doesn't understand how unfunny his material is. and i know he was mayor New York, but does that mean all of his speeches have to devolve into street corner-esque trash talk? i mean, i was half expecting him to start pulling out "yo mama" jokes last night...

There's an article on CNN about how black conservatives are thinking of voting for Obama because he's black, because it's historic, because symbolism is important and how their torn with their indecision.

That said, I think the environmentalist/tree-hugging hippie in me is what makes me find Palin very disagreeable.
