MTV News used the bass line from Megadeth's "Peace Sells" for their bumpers/intros. Discuss.

Ooooh oooh oohh, I really want to hear the Baby Huey stuff. How's the new Deerhoof? I liked the last one, but not quite as much as I like Apple O' or Milk Man.

Shannon, I'm totally with you on the Deerhoof -- Runners Four did not "do it for me" like the amazing Milk Man - Apple O' - Reveille run. This one does it for me even less. Less guitars, less live drums, more electronic stuff (bleeps and drums). The guitars and drums were the stuff I loved. this one seems to be more like that Green Cosmos EP that came out awhile back. I'm going to give it some more chances though, but it made almost zero impact on the first run through.

Now. Baby Huey and the Babysitters still wow me. It's a great combination of R&B/Soul and Psychedelia. The guy died at a relatively young age so, aside from a few earlier singles, this is really all there is (this collects the studio stuff they recorded for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label prior to Baby Huey's death). The LP is a mixed bag -- some shorter groovers, some longer psychedelic/funk with and without vocals (ie "California Dreamin'"!!!), but sequenced quite well. The LP's opening track "Listen to Me" is my secret weapon for improv show starters.

I found a couple mp3s online... check these out (you may recognize the "Hard Times" groove from Ghostface and some other hip hop tracks).

Hard Times (mono single mix) (though i have to admit i think the stereo mix that was posthumously made for the LP is WAY better)
Mighty Mighty pt. 2 (b-side of "Mighty Mighty" ...'Preciate it!
Mama Get Yourself Together (instrumental)
A Change is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke on acid)

Ah man, that Baby Huey stuff is nice. The Hard Times bit used by Ghostface sounds so different in another context. I find that a lot when I know samples from rap music and then I hear the originals. I felt that way a lot when I got the Stax box set and heard all the obscure singles that the RZA made half a career stealing.

I don't like it. ...I love it!! Fela is just amazing. I love Zombie (undeniable classic), but Na Poi (no linky mp3, boo) is my favorite for rockin the house. To be honest, I haven't pulled his stuff out in a while (overdue!).

I hadn't explored too much other African/Afrobeat type stuff beyond Fela for awhile, but then last year a friend lent me this:

...which knocked my socks off.

After that I discovered those Ethiopiques CDs that are also just insane. They made me realize just how much more there still is out there.

Then, most recently, I acquired a copy of the Africa 100: The Indestructible Beat 7xCD thing. Joe Tangari wrote an article about his explorations into Afrobeat (it's required reading -- check it!) and it's a great guide I'm sure I will come back to more than a few times. Well, in it he describes these 7 mix CDs he made called Africa 100, and somebody put either it or their own compiled version of it on the web. This has been keeping me and my mp3 player busy recently. (...and I'd love to share it if you have the least bit of interest.)
