Austin Improv

The Groundlings and Pimprov were amazing. Awesome energy, so perfectly seamless, and really showed again how important being confidant in what you say is. Amused the hell out of me and really inspired me too.

Noah may have come out of the show with one of my favorite lines of the night though.

"My fine, fellow African-Americans."

loved me some Pimprov...though due to how "Ho-lees" was dressed, i couldn't get the theme to "What's Happening?" out of my head all night.

I think Beth Burns said she was going to do a workshop on it. I really liked it a lot.

Pimpprov is the perfect festival show. There, I said it.

"Oh look, a cabinet with some glasses in it."

The glasses line was awesome, but made even better when he went to his mini-fridge.

Looking back, I was most happily amused and engaged during the Unexpected Company and Your Not My Real Dad shows.
They just had fantastic energy all the way through. Lots of skirting the edge. Scatter! was also really fun to watch. Oh, and I liked Junk too! Actually, I liked a lot this festival. I think Austin really brought it.
Oh, and for sketch, Rue Brutalia and Nerdvana were really shaking things up and doing great work.

Pimprov was great, but I think it's a pretty easy format to pull off because the safety nets are endless, but still, really fun show. The biggest guy was my favorite. He did such good character work even though he was playing the "pimp" guy on the outside. I really believed he was a 22 year old girl, and man, so much nicer than that girl probably was in those situations.

There was a lot of shows I had to miss do to preparing for the Sat. night party and warming up for other shows. Luckily for me, Roy has all the tapes! Though, it's not the same. I tried to watch the FUCT tape. It had to be more fun in person with that hot audience.

That's why I think its genius. Its a sure shot, a crowd pleaser, a landslide. And Pimps are just funny. I think the simplicity of the format is beautiful, a vast horizon of pimpdom. I talked with the pimps for a while; I get the feeling they may have met some pimps. Apparently they left 9 pimps at home. Can you imagine a Maestro with 12 PIMPS! I just love these guys, their pimp alter egos, and the totally fool proof format.

I was fortunate enough to be able to meet and spend time talking with most of the performers before and directly after the show. However, do to the nature of stage management I was not able to view in its entirety any one show. I can say that to be with so many wonderful performers in such an intimate situation is trully an honor. Its like being a midwife. Also, everyone was really happy to be performing and excited to see the other shows. From those of us in the seats, to those of us in the wings there was a great web of support and interest across the board. Which is exactly what OOB is all about. Its one big show and tell.

Oh, I did see all of Fort Ricky and it was super sweeeeeet! I want to be a Ricky now.

There is a certain improviser and her boyfriend who have been recording old episodes of the O.C. (broadcast daily on the soap channel) and watching them everyday. I'm not saying who.

I really loved Buddy Daddy. I've seen it before but there was something about this particular performance that had me riveted and giggling through the whole thing. My favorite part was the "this is my last loaf of bread" scene. Robin Goodfellow is an excellent actor.

I'd go so far as to say that "The OC" is one of my favorite shows so far.

As far as OoB '08 shows are concerned, I quite enjoyed Rue Brutalia, Unexpected Company, Get Up, Backpack Picnic, GGG and Pimprov.

I really enjoyed Varoom and You're not my Real Dad.

And The OC... jeez, I watched the first two seasons, couldn't put it down. Does anyone recommend the third season?

suffer through the rough patches of season 3, if only to fully bask in the awesomeness that is Taylor. and season 4, while truncated, is a return to form. also, more Taylor.
