Many years ago, back when Phil was in the scene regularly, Mikey and Lamb directed a Maestro show that was
supposed to be HARD. I cannot right now remember the exact label, but the idea was that it was a no frills,
be ready to play hard and fall hard. No wusses allowed.

To start the show, one of the directors asked the other., "How many players do you need?" There were 15
players in the cast that night, so the director replied, "Gimme fourteen players." Fourteen numbers were called
out. Those players were told they were "safe". The player with the number not called--Phil--was told that he was
eliminated before he ever got to do a scene. THAT'S how tough this Meastro was. Phil was PISSED OFF! He took his
name off the Maestro board, ripped it in half in front of the audience and stormed out of the theater.

Turns out it was a all big set-up--that Lamb and Mikey did it as a stunt. Phil couldn't even play Maestro
that night, he had to leave early. He was in on it the whole time.

When I heard that Phil had passed on, I thought...hoped...that this was just another stunt. That Phil was pulling
a prank. Cuz Phil was a comic genius and could pull off an Andy Kaufman better than anyone.

So sad you're gone, Phil. You brought so much fun and spirit and genius to the scene. You, Me and Greg
was just about the funnest thing in town. I miss you all so much.

I wanted to say a few nice things about Phil.

Phil Aulie was a nice, genuine, brilliant person. I met him early in 2005 at the Tuesday night Improv Jam sessions at the Hideout and I got to know him over the next few years at those jams and at the weekend shows. I played with him at Micetro and squared off against him in Cage Matches (which we always lost). Simply put, Phil was magic. He had something inside him that could make things engaging and compel you to keep watching and to laugh. He was the kind of performer that you would get excited to see in a cast and the kind of scene partner that you'd breath a sigh of relief to have next to you on stage. I don't know why he ever stopped performing improv but I wish he hadn't. I genuinely expected to see him on TV some day.

More than that, Phil was a superb human being. He was the kind of guy that you'd love to see at a party or to say hello to in the green room or the hallway. As fate has it, Phil was actually a concierge at my building in Austin. The day I moved in, I got an e-mail from him welcoming me to the building (this wasn't a form letter; he had noticed that I'd moved in and sent me a personal note) and every now and then I'd run into him as I was coming and going. I was always glad to see him and he was always glad to see me. I'm going to miss that.

Of course, I know that there's more to Phil than I knew from my brief encounters with him, as there would be for anyone. But the part I knew of Phil -- kind, generous and truly great -- was very real and the world is a little smaller without him.

Lastly, I want to say that my heart goes out to Phil's mother in particular. Back in the days of "You, Me and Greg", it was hard to know Phil without also knowing his mother. She came to all his shows and, by extension, came to a lot of all of our shows. Everyone knew who she was and everyone loved Phil, so it was easy to love her too. I always liked seeing her because I always wanted to tell her how I thought Phil was destined for fame. There's really nothing to say to someone who has lost a child, but in as much as this is the right venue to say it, I want to say that my thoughts are with her.

I am going to miss Phil.

Last night's "Celebration Service" was very touching and funny and sad all at the same time. I think singing "Happy Birthday" to a recently deceased friend is one of the saddest things I've ever experienced. RIP, Phil. You will be dearly missed.
