Woo hoo! i won! thanks for the tip Andy! went smooth as silk from there. :)

SUCK IT GRUES!

a lot of fun. i'd love to see cameos from other Hideout mainstays as well. and the bell got me thinking...would it be possible to have the game say "New choice" instead of "you can't see that" or something?

Welp, we gotta save somethin' for the sequel....

(Related note:  if y'all have any ideas for stuff that should go into future Hideout Text Adventures, post the suggestions or send them my way. :) )

P.S. Congrats!

(Hmm, now that people are winning I need to make it so that when you win, you get a list of amusing things to try out in the game.)

The rest of the country has no taste.  Forget this notion of red and blue states.  That's not the country we live in.  We live in a land mass divided into two groups -- those who watch "According to Jim" and those who watch "Arrested Development."  That's infinitely more frightening than anything politicians could dream up.

Okay, I've added code for entering the stairs, climbing the stairs, and climbing the ladder.  I've also made it possible to get a menu of amusing things to try when you win the game.

P.S. For some reason, getting the game to accept "go up the stairs" is freakishly difficult.  Oh well.

This is GREAT! Thanks for making it Peter!! It really makes me want to create some 8 bit graphics to go with it. (Maybe I will.)

some feedback:

I got stuck by the dumpster east of the hideout. There is no way to exit listed in the description of the location. No listing of stairs or a ladder out there. When I said "go west" it said "you can't leave the hideout". I had to restart a bunch on that one.

Also I used the climb stairs command in the stairwell (yay!) but it's weird having the stairs (go stairs), then the stairway (climb stairs) one after the other. Might be better to go [east/northeast] to the stairwell, then [climb/go/up] stairs.

I've been using "look" to look at stuff. Do I also need to "[examine/x]" stuff?

Also, when trying to interact with the chairs, I really wanted a clever quip about "sitting down on the job", but instead I got:
>sit on chairs
They're not something you can sit down on.
which still made me laugh... knowing those chairs.

1. Woo-hoo!  If you do make 8-bit graphics, let me know, and I should be able to include them in the game without too much trouble.

2. re: dumpster -- d'oh!  Yep, that's a bug.  I'll fix the description, and make west go back to the catwalk. For now, try going "up" from the alleyway, and you should get back to the catwalk.

3. Aha -- yeah, I can add a connection to put the stairway east of the coffeehouse.

4. Definitely examine stuff. "X" everything, and "ASK" everyone "ABOUT" stuff.

5. Ha!  Yeah, I'll put in a funny (funnier) response for sitting on the chairs.

Thanks for the feedback!
