Stop Sending Me Facebook Invites

Sure. There's a reason why the ColdTowne mailing list only goes out once a week and why we don't send people direct messages through facebook. However, event invites are just that. Invites. They aren't cluttering your personal message inbox and you can easily choose to ignore them.

There's a guy I used to know in NOLA who sends me a private message every time he books a show, which is over 30 a month. I removed him cause he's stupid.

And your right, most of those invites get ignored and thrown in the trash. But If you want a social network without show spam, don't hang out with artists or join a book club!

Yeah, I don't think the facebook invites are all that obnoxious. The problem is when the event starts sending you messages. There's really no reason to keep messaging people for an event, because you've pretty much decided weither or not you want to go once you see what it is.

The fact is, the facebook invites work more often than not, especially in my case, when one of the main compaints is "Why don't you tell me when your have a show?"

The important thing is not to cross the line and use your event to ANNOY people. I've got 91 unread messages in my inbox and maybe 2 of them are from actual people. I will not name names, but since you are all performers I'm sure you are already aware of the worst offenders in this case.

I admit that (a) I find out about things I wouldn't otherwise through Facebook and (b) it's not that hard to click through the invites. What bugs me is the complete disintegration of the wall between people's personal and professional lives, but I can't really blame Facebook for that.

I can, however, blame YOU, if you keep treating me like market share instead of your friend.

When I look at my friends, they turn into giant bags of money. Or hot dogs when I'm hungry. Cha-Ching!

Is it better or worse that it's coming from friends promoting art than pepsi promoting cola? <---- honest question.

I know what you mean, though I've never been a fan of shameless self promotion. I.E. the inability to talk about something other than oneself. But I'll make a distinction between promoting shows in the proper venue and being a complete douche bag.

On the other hand, Ratliff, I can say that I stopped telling friends about my shows in person long ago, because I don't want them to feel guilted into anything. Sending show announcements via Facebook makes it easy for them to know about the event, and ignore it guilt-free if they so choose. Doesn't seem so bad to me.

No, you're right. Just because I would prefer my social networking site to be a commercial-free zone doesn't trump other people's desire to promote themselves and their work.

Quite frankly, I don't need 30 different invites per week to 15 different shows and 15 different classes. I've signed up for the AIC e-mail which shows me everything going on that weekend anyway; anything from Facebook is redundant and gives me less information than that weekly schedule.

All I know is that, unlike the Coldtowne mailing list, unlike the AIC mailing list, unlike the New Movement mailing list - I sure as hell didn't sign up for receiving anything on Facebook.

I'm pretty sure it's in the amended terms and conditions.

Then change your privacy settings or delete them from your friends list. There's no reason to be negative about it. And I'm certain that most don't want the negativity on the forums.

I know that I love the invites because it keeps in the loop on what's happening now and what's coming up. I'd much rather have to deal with invites then to miss out on something that I really wanted to see.

I'm with Asaf on this one. I actually like the invites because I like seeing what else is going on. But, like Asaf, I don't like the ones in other cities. I feel like Mo Collins just isn't my friend anymore.
