Ok, the system is back up with 4GB of RAM and a shiny new 500GB drive wedged in it. Let me know if anything is funny ('weird' funny, not 'ha-ha' funny.)

After a great deal of swearing and pounding, I've finally shuffled around all the memory I bought this weekend, putting 4GB each in the mail and reserve servers, and 8GB into the web server (way more than it needs.) I had to buy another 2GB of DDR1 memory because the DDR2 memory I expected to move over to that box didn't fit; the upshot was that one machine got 4 1GB sticks of DDR2, another got 4 2GB sticks of DDR2, and the third got 4 1GB sticks of DDR1 (for everyone keeping score at home.)
Certain servers that shall remain nameless decided not to recognize the mouse until being hit repeatedly, luckily for them, the arrogant little boxes of sand are all now behaving again.
The gory details: watch the teal area labeled "swap" and the blue-grey line labeled "committed" - "swap" should go away, and "committed" should stay well within the colored area representing physical memory (below 4GB or 8GB, depending on when you look.) Now that this is under control, the speed of the forums is limited by something else, maybe by DSL uplink speeds, maybe by local disk or network -- who knows. At least I'm done opening the boxes for a while.
Oh, in case you're wondering, I firmly expect almost zero people to know or care what the hell I'm talking about; my concern is that this gets recorded and that people who might wonder what goes on behind the scenes get to see a little of it. It's a learned skill like any other and it's important to me that it's not locked behind a wall of jargon and expediency. It's most definitely not magic; in actuality it's more like plumbing, an art or a craft. The less that laymen know about this stuff, the more likely it is they'll get ripped off by some weasel.
