while 2 is technically still a type of set up for the punchline, I think it is important to note that the most important thing about step 2 is that what it is setting up is the pattern.
Could you please provide an example involving masturbation?

My dog always barks when my neighbors walk by. Sometimes, he barks when people walk by on tv. Sadly, he never barks when I masturbate him...cum.

1)I see my girlfriend after work everyday,
(2)cook her dinner, and...
(3)masturbate by myself.
(4)TONIGHT, I saw my girlfriend after work,
(5)lit candles, put on a soft R&B record, cooked her a quiche with a side of sauteed asparagus and baby spinach, and...
(6)masturbated by myself...
(7)then served her strawberries and cream for desert.
That's funny! Also known the stand up world as punchline, Tag, tag, tag. Always great stuff.

I was excited to think I had joined the Mile High Club
It was a thrilling accomplishment for me!
Then I found out that masterbating in Denver doesn't count!...

And the Bronco football fans don't appreciate it during a game.

That's it. It's a twist on the smallest number possible to establish a pattern. Doesn't always have to be quick though.
