I know way too much about this subject. Mary Read always passed herself off as a man, but Anne Bonney was much more open about being a woman - probably because she was sleeping with the Captain. There were many other female pirates that we know about through out history. Several of them pretended to be men, but some were very open about being women and even had all female crews. That would have been too fun.
