I had a professor in college who wrote a huge article on homoeroticism in Top Gun. He posits that Goose represented emasculation via heterosexuality because:

1) He was married. To a woman.
2) He wore a shirt during the volleyball scene.

And because of this

3) He died.

However, it might be giving too much credit to the filmmakers that the symbolism, etc. was intentional.

1) he loved her
2) he sunburned easily, and
3) his pilot lacked good judgment

...is too prosaic. How about this - your professor went on about homoeroticism in Top Gun because:

1) he was gay
2) he found the volleyball scene to be really hot, but Anthony Edwards spoiled his fantasy. Kinda like me imagining a foursome with Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Heather Graham and Bella Abzug.
3) he had way too much f***ing time on his hands

Is this why I was never any good in Art Appreciation?
