Austin Improv

For years I wanted to work at the convenience store.
young: to have all the free ICEEs I wanted
a bit older: to have access to all those porn mags
older: access to liquor (and still the porn)
older: right near snack foods for the impending munchies (and wow, porn rocks when you're high!)
older: access to condoms
older: it's a nice place to sit
now: all that money!

when i was reall little i wanted to be a monkey when i grew up. then i wanted to be an ice cream truck driver so i could eat ice cream whenever i wanted. then i wanted to be a lawyer cuz i heard they were rich. in high school it was a filmmaker, in college i decided i was going to be a professional improviser. i'm almost there, but i will never be a monkey. except in improv, where any job can be yours for 4 minutes.

So interesting...
Now that I am "grown up" and having worked for years doing mostly what I thought I'd be doing (performing and talking bout science and helping folks), I'd love to get to be a massage therapist, (or an emotional one), or for a real fun fantasy, a chef.
Scallops and linguine cooked in white wine. Mmmm.

If I had heard anything but horror stories about working in the restaurant industry, I'd probably be in cooking school right now.

Exactly. Its just a fantasy....you know the one where you also get to own a vineyard (that makes money!) in Napa.

That sounds perfect. I wish I still had cable......Bravo and Sci Fi were good friends of mine.

I've wanted to write a novel since I was 8. Now I am writing a novel at age 30. I hope to write more novels.

That's all I've ever really wanted to do. Write.

When I was about 10, I wanted to be a fireman. Still do actually.

At 14 I wanted to be a Marine Biologist. That lasted 1 year and ended when I found out I get violently seasick.

At 17 I wanted to be a US Marine. At 18 I made it happen. I wish I would have never gotten the injury that caused my discharge. I'd probably still be there today.

Then I wanted to be a teacher. Student teaching cured that.

Now I want to do something other than my current career in Nursing. Maybe welding, carpentry, or even going to medical school. Becoming a chef wouldn't seem so bad either.

So I think I'm pretty lucky. I got to do one job out of the many on my wish list, and I wouldn't give those memories up for the world.

Hey, me too!

I wanted to be a spy or a cop or, later, a rock star.

I took the California Occupational Preferences Survey in sixth or seventh grade and it said that the top two jobs that fit my answers were forest ranger and accountant. I remain baffled by this.

Oh, a fortune teller once told my dad that I would grow up to be another Carol Burnett, so I've got that going for me.

Ooh Mike - I had forgotten about that career placement exam. There's a Candid Camera episode featuring a teen aged Jon Stewart where he gets told by his principle that his assesment said he should definitively be a sheppard. It's pretty funny.

I believe mine told me I should either be a research scientist or a carpenter. Presumably the carpenter thing came from this one question that I still remember:

"Would you rather clean luandry for someone else or carve small animals out of wood".

Given the options - I chose carving small animals out of wood. Pretty bizarre.

I took one of those tests and it said I should be a police sketch artist.

I couldn't believe that job was even in the database.

I always wanted to be an actor.
